01 The idea

I need a collectable toy designed from my original character illustration.

She’s gonna be ICONIC.

The big idea:

We were asked to translate this 2D original character illustration (Libby!) into a fully realized 3D art toy ready for manufacturing. We were so excited to develop a production-ready model with detailed proportions and clearly defined surface details, textures, and seam lines. Libby is the first of the PeacePals series, so we wanted to not only translate her visage, but develop a body model that will be easily utilized for future character mods!

02 The Development

I like how her hair flows, but can we make the sparkle in her eyes larger?

A sparkle can never be too big, we gotchu.

The development:

The creator’s wanted to avoid having tedious work post-printing the model. So our challenge was clear: to sculpt miss Libby as efficiently as possible to allow this ready-upon-print goal!

As we continued developing her 3D model with active conversations with the creator, he had a genius idea to create an offspring concept of the PeacePals series. We were so excited to help this idea come to fruition, and thus we created the first of the keychain series…

03 The Result

What if she were a keychain?

Then she would be ICONIC.

The result:

Libby took on a new form with the keychain series! We were happy to provide detailed digital renderings of the keychain model, which helped with the engineering choices such as keychain attachment options, which areas to be concave or convex, etc. Ultimately, she was destined and designed to become a real life art toy…

04 The Takeaway

Ok wait, now I kinda want her to be a series…

We thought you’d never ask.

The takeaway:

For the prototypes, the creator chose their fabricator partner of choice and we opted for a 2-color print, to mitigate post-processing painting and tedious finalization. More to come: resin printed Libby keychains, Libby PeacePals sofubi toys, and even more brilliant ideas that we cannot wait to help make a reality :)
